St. Thomas Aquinas met a familiar opponent in Pompano Beach at the fifth annual BCAA Big 8 volleyball tournament at Pompano Beach High on Wednesday.

Also familiar was the Aquinas dominance after defeating the Tornadoes 25-20, 25-10.

The Raiders appear ready to defend their Class 8A state title. They also won a 7A state championship in 2015.

St. Thomas junior outside hitter Sophia Davis had a strong match and was effective at the net with 12 kills and three blocks.

“Davis was hard to stop and she wasn’t even on varsity last year,” St. Thomas coach Lisa Zielinski said. “Being new to the game, because she was a basketball player, she’s been able to grasp the game real quick.”

“I’ve been working really hard,” said Davis, who has already committed to James Madison. “I’m really glad how things played out they way it did in two sets.”

Paula Cerame added seven digs, seven points and four assists, and Maegan Dolph added seven digs for the Raiders.

Not only have the Raiders (16-5) won the tourney for the fifth consecutive year, they improved to 9-0 all time against Pompano Beach (12-7) since 2012. St. Thomas has also won 17 sets in a row over that time span, which also includes a 24-2 all-time set advantage.

Aquinas advanced to the final with a 25-16, 25-13 victory over Cypress Bay. Pompano Beach reached the championship match rallying to defeat Coral Springs Charter 15-25, 25-17, 15-10.
