Gables girls win regional tennis semifinal
The Coral Gables girls’ tennis team edged Coral Reef 4-3 in a tough Class 4A regional semifinal match at the Biltmore Tennis Courts.
Kristina Fernandez and Sofia Quevedo each won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, and teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles to lead the Cavaliers, who advanced to play Palmetto on Thursday afternoon in the regional final.
Paulina Bejar helped seal the outcome with a victory at No. 3 singles.

Gulliver kept its hopes of a state championship three-peat in both boys and girls’ tennis alive with impressive Class 2A regional semifinal victories on its school’s home courts.
The boys beat Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy 4-1 just hours after the girls swept Plantation American Heritage.
The road gets tougher for Gulliver on Thursday, however.
The Raiders’ girls will play at Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest at 10:30 a.m., and the boys will play at Plantation American Heritage at 3 p.m. The winners of both matchups will be considered strong contenders at next week’s state tournament in Orlando.
