Douglas, Cooper City reach BCAA softball title game

A two-RBI single by Kayla Boyle in the bottom of the fifth inning was just enough for Douglas to knock St. Thomas Aquinas out of the BCAA softball tournament semifinals 2-1 on Tuesday night at Silver Lakes Park South.

“I was just looking for a quality at bat,” Boyle said. “They are a great team, but we beat them earlier this year and wanted to prove ourselves [Tuesday].”

Pitcher Sami Feller won the game for the Eagles (20-5) on a strikeout with a Raiders runner in scoring position.

St. Thomas (17-6) was the defending champion of the BCAA Big 8 tournament, which is in its second year. The Raiders are also the reigning Class 7A state champions.

Cooper City (17-5) defeated South Plantation (14-10) 6-0 in the second BCAA semifinal, which was played at the same time as Douglas and Aquinas.

Pitcher Kara Lokeinsky struck out 13 batters and only allowed two hits.

“I am going to try and come out stronger against Douglas because I know they can hit and they just beat St. Thomas,” said Lokeinsky of the upcoming championship game.

Douglas will face Cooper City in the final at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Cowboys finished as the tournament runner-up to St. Thomas last season.

Pines Charter, Monarch, Flanagan and Western also competed in the tournament but went out in the first round.

BASKETBALL

Steve Fitzgerald, who helped turn Coral Springs Christian into a small-school boys’ basketball state power, will get the same opportunity at Dade Christian after accepting the boys’ basketball coach and athletic director positions.

“It was a very difficult decision,” Fitzgerald said. “We just felt like it was best thing for our family at this moment.

“Sometimes change is necessary for growth. I have been through six head masters at Coral Springs Christian. It just felt like the right time to do it.”

Gavin Felix, a four-year assistant, will succeed Fitzgerald at Coral Springs Christian.

Fitzgerald embellished his reputation as one of the state’s top coaches when he led the Crusaders to their first state semifinal appearance in the 2012-13 season.

With Class 4A-1A Broward Player of the Year Nura Zanna as their catalyst, the Crusaders upset Florida Air Academy in the 3A state semifinals before falling to Jacksonville Providence and star guard Grayson Allen — who provided a spark off the bench for Duke in its comeback victory over Wisconsin in the NCAA championship game on Monday — in the 3A state title game.

Fitzgerald inherits a Dade Christian program that finished 9-15 this past season.
