Northwestern, Deerfield Beach rise to top spots in state poll
Following its victory over reigning Class 6A state champion Miami Carol City, Deerfield Beach ascended to the top spot in Class 8A in the latest state football rankings released by The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Dominant defensive efforts first in a preseason classic against Chaminade and later in the 6-2 win over Carol City last week has the Bucks (1-0), who received all 14 first-place votes, feeling confident as they chase their first state championship ever.
Deerfield Beach is one of six South Florida teams ranked No. 1 out of the eight classifications as was the case in last week’s season-opening poll. The Bucks supplanted Southridge, which fell to No. 7 after its 27-6 loss to Cardinal Gibbons on Saturday.
Gibbons moved up to the second spot in Class 5A right behind rival and defending state champion Plantation American Heritage.
St. Thomas Aquinas (Class 7A), Miami Northwestern (Class 6A), Miami Booker T. Washington (Class 4A) and Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (Class 3A) all retained their top spots.
FOOTBALL
▪ Monsignor Pace 15, Boyd Anderson 0: The Spartans (1-0) racked up over 200 yards on the ground Friday night with Tyrone Douglas gaining 140 yards on 15 carries. Douglas also scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter to give Pace a 6-0 lead. The score was set up by a diving interception by freshman James Williams at the BA 1.
