A second consecutive state championship and a top 10 national ranking highlighted Miami Country Day’s girls’ basketball season.

The Spartans have a chance to earn more accolades in the coming weeks.

Miami Country Day was selected for the first time to play in the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School basketball National Invitational April 2-4 in New York.

The Spartans, who went 30-2 this season and soared as high as No. 6 in the national rankings by USA Today, are one of four teams including Class 5A state champion Fort Lauderdale Dillard that were chosen for the event that will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPNU.

Nationally-ranked and undefeated Blanche Ely was also chosen on the boys’ side.

Miami Country Day will play in a girls’ semifinal against Gonzaga Prep Friday, April 3 at 11 a.m. at Christ The King High School. Gonzaga Prep (27-0), ranked No. 17 by USA Today, is the first school from the state of Washington to be selected to the tournament and is on a 50-game winning streak. Laura Stockton, the daughter of NBA great John Stockton, is one of the team’s stars.

The winner of that game will get the chance to play at Madison Square Garden April 4 at 10 a.m. in the championship game against the winner of Dillard-South Shore (NY). Dillard is making its third appearance in the tournament and plays Friday at 1 p.m.

Blanche Ely will open the eight-team boys’ tournament April 2 at noon against Nevada’s Findlay Prep in a quarterfinal. The field also includes national powerhouses Montverde Academy and Oak Hill Academy.
