St. Thomas Aquinas girls, boys lacrosse teams advance to state title game

Down two goals with less than eight minutes to play, St. Thomas Aquinas didn’t panic.

Just last week, the Raiders’ girls lacrosse team faced a similar predicament, trailing Delray-American Heritage by three in the second half. St. Thomas rallied to force overtime and beat the Stallions to win regionals.

MORE LACROSSE

The St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ lacrosse team beat Palm Beach Gardens-Benjamin 14-11 in a state semifinal on Friday at Jupiter High School.

The Raiders led 6-3 after one quarter and 8-5 at halftime. They were ahead 9-7 going into the final quarter, where they outscored Benjamin 5-4. The Buccaneers finished 16-4.

For St. Thomas, Kevin Crowley scored four goals with two assists. Brock Gonzalez added three goals and an assist. Michael Costello had two goals and an assist, and Jimmy Harrington scored twice.

Ahead 9-8 in the fourth quarter, Costello and Crowley scored to increase the lead to three. After Benjamin recorded a goal, Gonzalez, CJ Borodiak and Crowley scored with under four minutes to play to put the game away.

St. Thomas (21-1) will play Orlando-Lake Highland Prep (17-6) at 7 p.m. Saturday for the state championship.

Palm Glades Academy senior point guard Justin Lilavois signed with William Penn University, an NAIA program in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He is the first student-athlete from the school to sign with a college.
