FHSAA changes football playoff format

Miami Herald Staff Reports

The Florida High School Athletic Association board of directors voted to approve a new football playoff format at its meeting Monday.

Beginning with the 2017 season, district play will be eliminated in Classes 1A-4A, with teams making the playoffs based on a points system. Classes 5A-8A will retain districts, with the district champion receiving an automatic playoff bid.

For Classes 1A-4A, no region or district play will be required, as each school will control its own schedule. Four teams from each region (16 total) will make the playoffs based on the new points system.

District play for Class 5A-8A will remain, with 32 teams qualifying for the playoffs in each class. District champions will receive an automatic bid to the playoff and will receive a 1-4 seed based on the new points system.

Four wild cards will be taken from each region based on points following the conclusion of Week 11.

In all eight classes, the higher seed will host.

▪ Goleman 42, Westland Hialeah 0: Reserve quarterback Christopher Vidal threw three touchdown passes, and Claudius Pubien scored twice on runs.

Vidal, also a starter at outside linebacker, joined linebackers Jose Valdivia and John Wright to anchor a strong defense that did not allow Westland to cross midfield.

Goleman is 4-1 overall, 4-0 in Class 7A district play. The Gators already matched last season’s win total with five games to play.

The game was postponed Friday because of lightning and moved from Milander Park to Goleman.

Other scores: Hollywood Hills 14, Everglades 13; Miramar 35, South Plantation 13.

▪ Saturday: Coral Shores 13, Belle Glade-Glades Day 12: In the first quarter, Coral Shores quarterback Juan Pablo Aborrezco completed a 48-yard TD pass to Elijah Woods. The PAT was blocked, and the score was even at six. Trailing 12-6 with 2:20 remaining in the fourth quarter, Aborrezco tossed a 33-yard TD pass to Woods, and Sean Walters kicked the winning extra point.
