Late touchdown lifts Belen over rival Gulliver
Two longtime private school rivals went at it hard on Saturday afternoon and in the end it was Belen Jesuit, on the strength of a late touchdown run that prevailed over host Gulliver Prep 13-10 in front of a big crowd of students and alumni at Sean Taylor Field.
With Belen down 10-7, freshman running back Don Chaney took off around the left side on a power sweep and scored from 25 yards out with 1:44 left to put the Wolverines up.
With Gulliver facing a fourth-and-3 with just over a minute to go, Belen’s Matthew Martin dove for Gulliver quarterback Will Poses legs on a quarterback draw and brought him down for no gain to end the issue.
“It hasn’t been in consecutive years but this is 12 times in row we’ve beaten them and our kids did not want to be the ones that saw that streak end,” said Belen coach Rich Stuart, whose team spent a week in Ireland the previous week and did not return until Monday. “This was a tough week because the kids were definitely in a little of a funk for a while from the jet lag but fortunately they came out here [Saturday] and found a way to get it done against one of our great rivals.”
On the strength of a 16-yard Pedro Garcia touchdown run early in the second quarter, the Wolverines nursed the 7-0 lead all the way into the fourth quarter before seeing it all fall apart.
That’s when, despite being sacked seven times on the day for 60 yards in losses, Poses came through. On third-and-goal from the Belen 14, he avoided a sack and found Jordan Lyon for a touchdown to tie the score 7-7 with 9:40 left.
Davonte Montgomery then intercepted Belen quarterback Lucas Pola on the next series setting the Raiders (1-2) up at the Belen 25, which led to a Chris Hoyos 22 yard field goal with 5:42 left to put Gulliver up.
When Pedro Jimenez picked off another Pola pass on the very next play to set his team up at the Wolverines’ 19, it appeared the Raiders had things won.
But a poor exchange between Poses and running back Robert Burns on the very next play resulted in a fumble and Ryan Fernandez recovered giving the Wolverines the ball back at their own 20 with 3:58 left to set up the winning drive.
“It was a basic buck sweep and my o-line did a great job of sealing the blocks and springing me outside,” Chaney said of his winning score. “I just wanted to come through for my team and was glad there were no flags when I scored.”
The fact that there was no flag on the ground when Chaney found the end zone was a feat in itself as the Wolverines spent most of the day dealing with penalties, 16 of them for 152 yards, a half dozen of them unsportsmanlike penalties.
“Absolutely unacceptable and practice will be quite interesting on Monday,” Stuart said. “You can rest assured of that.”
