Douglas, Aquinas, North Broward coaches are Broward Baseball Coaches of the Year
Three programs have dominated Broward County baseball in recent years.
Stoneman Douglas, St. Thomas Aquinas and North Broward Prep have each collected their share of state championships.
Under Todd Fitz-Gerald, Douglas extended its state-record championship streak this season in Class 7A.
Under Joey Wardlow, St. Thomas Aquinas picked up where it left off a year ago by repeating as Class 6A champions.
And under Brian Campbell, North Broward Prep returned to the state final by beating some of the state’s best teams.
Fitz-Gerald, Wardlow and Campbell are the Miami Herald’s Broward County Baseball Coaches of the Year.
Fitz-Gerald and Wardlow share honors for Classes 7A-5A after leading their respective teams to state titles. Campbell earns the honor for Class 4A-1A.
Fitz-Gerald helped the Eagles navigate through a challenging season to win their sixth consecutive state title and their seventh overall. Fitz-Gerald has led Douglas to all of them as well as two in a prior coaching stint at Plantation American Heritage.
Fitz-Gerald did so this season while dealing with adversity off the field as his wife, Colleen, has been battling brain cancer. She became a source of inspiration for the Eagles throughout the season.
Wardlow’s team was resilient in Class 6A as well as the Raiders pulled off multiple playoff comebacks to claim their second state title in a row and fourth overall.
Aquinas, which leaned heavily on its power hitters in its 2025 championship run, used a more balanced mix of pitching and defense this time to claim the crown.
Campbell’s program, which had won three state titles in a four-year span prior to this season, wasn’t counted as a favorite to return this year. But the Eagles opened eyes by going on the road and defeating Clearwater Calvary Christian in a two-game sweep in the Region 3-3A final.
North Broward Prep then advanced to the state final with a win over South Sumter and nearly knocked off Santa Rosa Beach South Walton, a team ranked in the top 10 nationally.
