Winning state championships was once just the dream of the Miami Edison flag football team.

But over the past two seasons, the Red Raiders have made it a reality not once, but twice.

This season, despite fielding a younger roster full of talented freshmen and sophomores, Edison made it back to the top and once again was one of the most dominant teams in the state.

Under the tutelage of longtime coach Vince Hall, the Red Raiders repeated as state champions in Class 1A.

And so, Hall is once again the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade County Flag Football Coach of the Year.

Hall has helped set a standard of winning at Edison for a decade as the Red Raiders made their seventh trip to the state final four since 2017.

After winning their first state championship last season on a Hail Mary touchdown pass from senior Rakyia Louis to former receiver Poetry Auguste, the Red Raiders didn’t need any dramatic moments to win the title this season.

Behind Louis’ on-field leadership and four touchdown passes, Edison routed Somerset Canyons 33-12 to claim the Class 1A title this season.

The Red Raiders made history as the first Miami-Dade school to win back-to-back state championships.

The victory capped a 19-1 season, which included another district championship along the way.

Louis graduates as one of the most prolific passers in Miami-Dade County history, and Edison also loses two-way standout Malaysia David.

But Hall will have the majority of his roster returning next season, setting the Red Raiders up for a run at a potential three-peat.

“Being the first one to repeat is special,” Hall said after the state final. “We let the girls know before the game that we had a chance to make history for Miami-Dade teams and maybe even beyond that, and they did it.”
