Cypress Bay’s Michael Brunt is the Broward Tennis Coach of the Year
Weston Cypress Bay has been a perennial state championship contender in tennis for years under the guidance of coach Michael Brunt.
This season, both the Lightning boys and girls continued to add championships both individually and as a team to their run of sustained success under Brunt’s watch.
As a result, Brunt is the Miami Herald’s Broward County Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis Coach of the Year.
Brunt led the Cypress Bay boys to a state runner-up finish in Class 4A. The Lightning went undefeated at 15-0 during the season, led at the top of the singles and doubles divisions by the team of sophomore Sebastian Graff and senior Sebastian Elias. Cypress Bay swept the district and regional championship before falling in the state final against Doral Academy.
On the girls’ side, Cypress Bay also swept through the competition in the regular season in Class 4A on its way to district and regional championships.
The Lightning then advanced to the state semifinals before losing to Miami Palmetto.
Freshman Nicoletta Contento led Cypress Bay at the top of the singles rotation with wins over several of the top players in Broward. Contento teamed with junior Laura Kamil Wassef in doubles to win a district championship in that division as well.
