Doral’s Seidle-Lubowitz, True North’s Chow are Dade Tennis Players of the Year
When Caleb Chow isn’t on the tennis court in the near future, he hopes to be soaring high above in a jet fighter.
After a stellar high school career at True North Classical Academy, Chow is headed to the Air Force Academy.
Meanwhile at Doral Academy, sophomore Payton Siedle-Lubowitz is already reaching new heights for one of the state’s most successful programs.
Chow and Siedle-Lubowitz are the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade County Tennis Players of the Year.
Chow, a senior, is the Boys’ Player of the Year after leading True North back to the state finals in Class 1A. Unfortunately for the Titans, they were denied a championship repeat by Boca Raton St. Andrews.
But that didn’t stop Chow, one of the highest-rated players in the state, from having another stellar season in both singles and doubles. In singles, Chow went unbeaten until the state finals beating some of the top competition in the state along the way.
“We won last year and came up a little short, but our energy was great and the coaches were great and I loved my 5 years at True North,” Chow said.
Chow, whose older brother also played at True North, and uncle coaches the team, said he was inspired by his grandfather, who had a love for aviation, and credits him for his decision to choose the Air Force Academy.
“I’ve been wanting to fly since sophomore year,” Chow said.
Seidle-Lubowitz had a successful run during the regular season in singles as well, which helped her qualify for state individually in both singles and doubles. She had her greatest success in doubles when she teamed with Stefany Zamora to win the individual Class 4A state championship in that division before losing in the overall bracket. She also beat some of the state’s best during an impressive season in which she finished with a 15-1 record.
“I had a great season,” Seidle-Lubowitz said. “‘Practice makes progress’ is what I always heard my mom tell me growing up, and I always try to work my hardest.”
