Lourdes senior Lorena Alvarez continuously strives to be the best at anything she sets a goal to achieve.

Whether it was in the classroom or on the soccer field, Alvarez often makes it to the top.

This year, Alvarez is concluding a stellar high school career as her school’s valedictorian.

And that on the heels of playing a key role in the Bobcats’ soccer team claiming their first state championship since 2020.

For those accomplishments and more on and off the field, Alvarez is the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade Girls’ Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Alvarez was a first team All-Dade selection in soccer this past season, and a key part of Lourdes’ talented midfield.

In the classroom, Alvarez maintained a 4.0 weighted and 5.63 unweighted grade point average, which helped her finish at the top of her class. She also aced the ACT, scoring a perfect 36.

Alvarez’s accomplishments earned her a full scholarship to the University of Florida.

Along the way, Alvarez scored the highest academic GPA in 24 of her 27 classes and was in the top 1 percent for the prestigious Harvard Prize Book Award. She is also a member of multiple National Honor Societies.

When it came to the soccer field, Alvarez consistently stepped up in big moments for the Bobcats. Alvarez was a part of two state runner-up teams and four district championships.

But no moment was bigger than the play she made in the state championship match against Tallahassee Chiles.

With the game still close and Lourdes leading 1-0, Alvarez dropped a perfect corner kick in front of the net and teammate Gianna Gray headed it home and past Chiles goalkeeper Grace Gerteisen with 16:30 to play. Lourdes would go on to score a third goal, but the key assist allowed the Bobcats to begin to put the match away, and settle down any nerves stemming from past losses at state.

“When we got that goal just before half, that’s what gave us the momentum we needed to take into the second half and finally finish it,” Alvarez said after that game. “All of us as a team, we came together in the hotel this morning and said we were going to bring that trophy home with us, no matter what it took.”
