McSweeney, Roe, Sandi, Roca are the Broward Boys’ Basketball Coaches of the Year
Broward County was coming off a historically-successful season in boys’ basketball.
A year after a record five teams won state titles, three of them - Calvary Christian, Sagemont and St. Thomas Aquinas - repeated as champions.
And a fourth, Pembroke Pines Charter, joined the party by winning its second in the past three seasons.
The coaches behind these waves of success for their respective schools, Cilk McSweeney (Calvary Christian), David Roe (Sagemont), Julius Sandi (STA) and Dave Roca (Pines Charter), are the Miami Herald’s Broward County Boys’ Basketball Coaches of the Year.
McSweeney and Roe shared honors for Classes 3A-1A as they continued to lead two of the top programs in the country.
McSweeney led Calvary Christian to another top national ranking as well as its second consecutive state championship and fifth overall. Led by MaxPreps Junior All-American Cayden Daughtry, the Eagles cruised to the Class 3A state championship and a No. 2 national ranking per MaxPreps. Calvary Christian followed up its success during the season with a semifinal finish at The Throne tournament.
Roe led Sagemont to its sixth state title all-time and fourth in a row, which is the longest active championship streak by a Broward school and is tied for the longest all-time in county history.
The Lions cruised to another state title in Class 1A, led by LSU commit and All-Broward first team selection Kevin Thomas.
Sandi and Roca split honors for Classes 7A-4A.
For Sandi, it was once again a run to a state title as a family for the second consecutive season watching his sons, DJ and KJ, and 7A-4A Player of the Year Clarence Westbrook Jr. power a talented Raiders roster to the Class 6A state championship. It was Aquinas third overall.
Roca has directed Pembroke Pines Charter to one of the most consistent seven-year runs of any team in Broward as the Jaguars have made it to at least the regional finals every season during that span.
This season, Pines Charter dominated in Class 5A on its way to its third state championship since 2021, led by the potent trio of Zacuras Dawson, Robert Guishard and Anthony Walcott.
