For the past four seasons, few girls’ basketball players in Broward County have been as consistent or as valuable to their teams as Jaelynn Housey.

Her versatility at both ends of the court, and reliable production this season led Nova High to a BCAA Big 8 championship and an appearance in the Class 6A regional finals.

Housey’s efforts earned her the respect of her peers and the distinction of being this season’s Broward County Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year for Classes 7A-5A for the Miami Herald.

“(This award) was definitely something I’ve been striving for and a surreal moment, but I still have a lot of work to do,” Housey said.

After starting her career at Hollywood Chaminade, Housey transferred to Nova High and has kept the Titans among the top teams in the state for the past three years.

This past season, Housey averaged 17.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.4 steals per game.

Housey is next hoping to carry that success to Florida Atlantic University where she will play her collegiate ball.

Housey led Nova to its first BCAA county championship since 2018 and a victory over rival St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as a 23-5 season overall.

Despite losing the rematch with St. Thomas Aquinas in the Region 4-6A final, Housey feels she learned how to be more of a leader on the court during the Titans’ impressive season - a trait she hopes will translate to success at the next level.

“I feel like I could bring a lot to their team as both a leader and as an individual player,” Housey said. “My high school career was a great journey and I learned a lot of lessons. There were downfalls, but those got me to be the person I am today.”
