Pines Charter, Heritage coaches are Broward Boys’ Soccer Coaches of the Year
Pembroke Pines Charter wasn’t a sure thing to make it back to the state boys’ soccer finals.
And after a three-win season, the future wasn’t certain for a proud American Heritage program.
But this season, both Pines Charter’s Marc Lue Young and American Heritage’s Todd Goodman led their teams’ impressive seasons, which both ended with appearances in state championship games.
And so, Goodman and Lue Young are the Miami Herald’s Broward County Boys’ Soccer Coaches of the Year for the 2025-26 season.
Goodman, the Coach of the Year for Classes 4A-1A, led a squad that was competitive last season, but often couldn’t find the winning formula as it struggled to a 3-7-7 season.
That all turned around this year as the Patriots went 17-4-1 and advanced to the Class 4A state championship game. Although the season ended with a disappointing 2-0 overtime loss to Orlando Bishop Moore, American Heritage was back to its familiar status as one of the state’s best programs.
Led by senior forward Clayton Boone, the Miami Herald’s 4A-1A Player of the Year, scored wins over Class 6A state semifinalist St. Thomas Aquinas and Mater Lakes, a state runner-up the prior season.
The Patriots, who have won a Broward-record eight state championships, graduate eight seniors, but will look to build off this season’s success.
Lue Young, the Coach of the Year for Classes 7A-5A, led the Jaguars to the state semifinals with an 18-1-2 record last season before losing 1-0 to Tampa Jesuit.
A year later, he led a re-tooled roster to another winning season and back to the state final four. This time, the Jaguars beat Jesuit and advanced to the state final for the first time since 2020 and second time in program history.
Pines Charter’s season ended with a tough overtime loss to St. Johns Beachside in the final. The Jaguars graduate over 10 seniors and will look to rebuild next season to make another run at winning the school’s first state title.
