James Perrone is steadily building up a legacy in Miami, and he has one more year to add to it.

For now, the quarterback can add another award to his growing list of accolades: Perrone, for the second straight year, is the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade County Football Offensive Player of the Year for Classes 7A-4A.

A year ago, Perrone split the award with former Norland quarterback Ennio Yapoor after propelling Southridge to the region finals for the first time since it won its last state championship in 2016. In 2025, Perrone again guided Spartans to the Region 4-6A championship, where they fell just short against West Broward.

Despite the loss, Perrone was at his best in the region championship, setting a season-high with 368 passing yards and throwing for all three of Southridge’s touchdowns. In the Spartans’ three postseason games, Perrone went 58 of 76 for 956 yards, eight touchdowns and only one interception, plus 132 yards and two more touchdowns on 12 carries.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior topped 250 passing yards in six games and scored wins against playoff teams Columbus, Goleman, Palmetto, Hialeah, Edison, South Dade, Nova and Piper. For the season, Perrone went 193 of 295 for 3,231 yards, 33 touchdowns and five interceptions, with 58 carries for 636 yards and nine more touchdowns, plus a two-point conversion.

Perrone, who has been playing in varsity games since he was in eighth grade at Dade Christian, is up to 8,516 passing yards and 83 passing touchdowns in his career.

“It’s been a lot of hard work and I’m just happy through it all,” Perrone said. “I keep wanting more and the more work I put in the better I get.”

Although he likely won’t track down Yapoor to set Dade County passing records, Perrone is putting together one of the most productive quarterbacking careers in county history.

A three-star prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings for the Class of 2027, Perrone is already orally committed to South Florida and has transferred to Miami Central since the end of the season.
