Ferguson’s Viart and Brito are the Miami-Dade County Bowlers of the Year
Rashawn Viart capped his bowling career with one of the strongest finishes of any bowler in Miami-Dade County.
And Angelie Brito had one of the most dominant seasons by a freshman in recent memory.
The Ferguson High bowling duo made sure the Falcons remained the top team in the county and one of the best in the state.
Viart and Brito are the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade County Boys’ and Girls’ Bowlers of the Year respectively.
Viart earned boys’ honors after rolling a season average of 215 and leading the Falcons to team championships of the GMAC, Youth Fair and District 17 meets.
Viart bowled a 300 game during the season and finished 16th at state, qualifying for the individual bracket championship. Viart lost in the first round, but advanced to the third round in the consolation bracket.
“This was one of my best seasons, bowling a 300 for the first time in history for the school,” Viart said. “Everyone went crazy that day. It was one of my best days. We’ve accomplished a lot of goals as a team.”
Brito is the Girls’ winner after a breakout season during which she also led Ferguson to GMAC, Youth Fair and District 17 championships.
Brito, who started bowling when she was in sixth grade, maintained an impressive 183 season average and punched a ticket to state by rolling a 521 to win the District 17 individual title. Brito missed the cut at state, but finished a county-best 23rd overall individually.
But for Brito, it is likely just the beginning as she figures to be her team’s leader for three more seasons.
“It was a lot of fun in general,” Brito said. “We got to state and did pretty good. Being on this team is fun, the community around it is really great. Both sides of our team support each other as if we were one team and it’s amazing.”
