Douglas’ Gregory, Springs Charter’s Mason are Broward Bowling Coaches of the Year
Stoneman Douglas’ Mike Gregory and Coral Springs Charter’s Greg Mason each guided their respective squads this season on the way to becoming some of the state’s best squads.
Gregory led Douglas to the best finish among Broward boys’ teams at the state meet. Mason did the same for Coral Springs Charter on the girls’ side.
Gregory and Mason are the Miami Herald’s Broward County Bowling Coaches of the Year as a result.
Gregory, the Boys’ Coach of the Year, led the Eagles to a 15th-place finish, helping them qualify for the elimination bracket at state. Douglas also was one of the most consistent teams throughout the season and finished as a district runner-up.
Douglas was led by Bryce Gregory and Luke Munson, who each had strong seasons and led the Eagles on their run to the state meet. Gregory posted a 197 average during the season and Munson finished fifth at districts, and bowled a personal-best 287 during the regular season.
Mason, the Girls’ Coach of the Year, brought back a talented squad, which put together a dominant season in the county.
The Panthers bested some of the county’s best by winning the BCAA team championship. Charter followed that up by winning their district championship. The Panthers then earned a ninth-place finish in the state team qualifier before advancing further than any other county team in the Baker tournament where they reached the fifth round.
Sophomore Faith Tucker won an individual district title to lead the Panthers.
Mason’s squad also included versatile athletes such as junior Cameron Thiele and senior Gio Gurgel, who have both stood out in softball as well.
