McArthur’s Willman, South Plantation’s Montefusco are Broward Bowlers of the Year
McArthur’s Ryder Willman and South Plantation’s Sofia Montefusco set the bar high this season for all Broward County bowlers.
They were consistent and dominant in their respective competitions and finished with strong performances at state.
And so, Willman and Montefusco are the Miami Herald’s Broward County Bowlers of the Year.
Montefusco, a senior and the Girls’ Bowler of the Year for the first time, is headed to UCF after a great finish to her high school career.
Montefusco averaged 163 for the season, and topped her previous high marks during her junior season.
She placed 13th at the state meet, and bowled a 560 high series to secure a district championship.
Her efforts helped the Paladins finish fifth in the state team qualifying round after winning a district championship.
“It was really crazy and it felt really cool to be named Player of the Year,” Montefusco said. “Going to states was the main goal and I accomplished that so that was really fun.”
Montefusco joined the Paladins’ team as a freshman and became a mainstay since.
Montefusco plans to continue bowling in college and build off a high school career in which she helped South Plantation advance to state three consecutive years.
Few players around the state were as consistent as Willman was during his junior season.
Willman finished with a county-best 209 average, and led the Mustangs to a district runner-up finish to earn a bid to the state meet.
Once there, Willman rolled a combined score of 830 to finish 32nd overall. His score was the best by any boys bowler from Broward and followed up a strong season in which he bowled a perfect 300 game and placed third individually at districts.
