Gibbons’ May, North Broward’s Volpi are Broward Cross-country Coaches of the Year
The North Broward Prep boys and Cardinal Gibbons girls’ cross-country teams remained among the best in the state this season.
Each squad earned top 10 finishes at the state championships under the leadership of coaches John May and John Volpi.
May and Volpi are the Miami Herald’s Broward County Cross-Country Coaches of the Year.
Volpi is the Boys’ Coach of the Year after leading North Broward Prep’s boys to an eight-place finish at the Class 2A state meet after a successful season, which included a regional runner-up finish and third-place finish at districts.
North Broward Prep’s squad was led by senior Wills Gillis, who finished third at the Class 2A state meet with a time of 16:10, and also won a district championship and placed fifth at regionals.
Gillis also led the Eagles to a third place finish at the 2A-1A race of the Spanish River Invitational.
May is the Girls’ Coach of the Year after guiding Cardinal Gibbons’ girls to a second consecutive top 10 finish as the Chiefs tied for ninth at the 2A state meet.
Gibbons went unbeaten against all BCAA opponents and finished third at the conference and regional meets.
Led by sophomore Claire Chanon, who placed 23rd individually at state, the Chiefs also picked up team championships at the Astronaut, Spanish River and district meets.
