Vallmitjana and Radich are the Broward County Swimmers and Divers of the Year
Few dominated the sport of diving in Florida over the past four years like Cardinal Gibbons senior Juliet Radich.
And over at NSU University School, junior Juan Vallmitjana continued to develop into one of the best swimmers in the state.
So for the second consecutive season, Vallmitjana and Radich stood out as Broward County’s best.
Vallmitjana and Radich are this year’s Miami Herald Broward top athletes in swimming and diving.
Radich earned the honor for the third consecutive season after she remained unbeaten for the fourth consecutive season and emerged with her third consecutive state championship.
Radich, a University of North Carolina signee, posted a score of 527.40 points at the Class 2A meet, earning her top marks among all state divers this year, and the top score of her career at state. She also earned a personal record 556.25 at regionals.
Radich went 40 consecutive meets without losing a diving competition in high school, and the only reason she doesn’t have a fourth state title is because Hurricane Nicole forced the competition to be moved back a week during her freshman season when Radich was scheduled to compete in an international meet in Ireland.
Vallmitjana wins on the boys’ side for the second consecutive season after winning multiple individual state titles. Vallmitjana won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle events at the Class 1A state meet. He swam a 1:37.34 to win the 200 and a personal-best 4:23.80 in the 500 free.
Both were Automatic All-American times for Vallmitjana, who has committed to the University of Virginia, and competes internationally with Spanish club Natación Barcelona.
