Columbus’ Scholer, Ferguson’s Del Rosario are the Miami-Dade Bowling Coaches of the Year
Columbus’ Adam Scholer and Ferguson’s Marcela Del Rosario have seen their respective bowling programs flourish in recent years.
The 2024 season was no different.
Both the girls’ and boys’ programs at Ferguson had stellar years while the Explorers peaked when it counted most.
As such, Scholer and Del Rosario are this year’s Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Bowling Coaches of the Year.
Scholer takes home the honors on the boys’ side after leading Columbus to the best finish at state of any Miami-Dade County team.
The Explorers placed 17th at the state meet just barely missing the cut for the top 16 Baker bracket tournament after knocking down a total of 3,725 pins. Columbus was led by first team All-Dade selection Sergio Alonso, a junior, who placed 25th individually at state.
The clutch outing came a week after a district runner-up finish. The Explorers also secured a runner-up finish in the GMAC championship, nearly dethroning reigning champion Ferguson. Columbus beat the Falcons in the opening round of the tournament before falling twice in the finals.
Del Rosario’s squad on the boys’ side was dominant, repeating as champions in the aforementioned GMAC tournament and also winning the Youth Fair Invitational. But on the girls’ side, no one finished better as the Falcons also repeated as GMAC champs and carried that momentum into the postseason.
Del Rosario, the Girls’ Bowling Coach of the Year, watched her team finish a Dade-best 27th at state after the Falcons collectively knocked down 2,629 pins. A deep squad, led by seniors Karla Portillo and Briana Canahuate and juniors Emma and Isabella Jaramillo, also secured a district championship the prior week after topping Miami Southridge.
