Coral Springs Charter’s Wahlbrink, Gurgel are Broward Softball 5A-2A Players of the Year
Courtney Wahlbrink and Giovanna Gurgel each know something about persevering through adversity.
Wahlbrink, a freshman, stepped up immediately when Coral Springs Charter’s softball team lost its ace Sophia Bertorelli to injury to open this past season.
Wahlbrink didn’t just fill in for Bertorelli. She became one of the most dominant pitchers in the country to keep the Panthers among the best of the best.
A year after missing her freshman season with a knee injury, Gurgel was back in form and the key cog in a lineup that continued to dominate the competition.
For their accomplishments, Wahlbrink and Gurgel are the Miami Herald’s Class 5A-2A Softball Pitcher and Player of the Year respectively for Broward County.
Led by Wahlbrink in the circle and Gurgel at the plate Coral Springs Charter went 26-4 and returned to the Class 3A regional finals. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they could not overcome a familiar nemesis, losing to Somerset Silver Palms.
But Wahlbrink, a freshman, and Gurgel, a sophomore, return next season to lead a strong core of players as they hope to win the school’s first state title since 2019.
“There were big shoes to fill with (Bertorelli) out,” Wahlbrink said. “She’s a really good pitcher and a role model. She guided me through the whole season. She relieved much of the pressure I felt.”
Wahlbrink went 25-4 and posted 213 strikeouts, six shutouts and a 0.46 ERA. Her efforts led the Panthers to another BCAA Big 8 title as well as a district championship.
“I wasn’t surprised how well I played,” Wahlbrink said. “I felt my team had my back.”
And they did with Gurgel leading the way.
Gurgel, who transferred to CSC after playing at Doral Academy her eighth grade season, hit .429 with nine home runs, seven doubles and 47 RBI for the Panthers.
“I thought our season went very well and that’s what I expected,” Gurgel said. “As an athlete I’ve grown a lot throughout the year. All my hard work does pay off.”
