Cypress Bay’s Tyler Johnson is the Broward Boys’ Volleyball Player of the Year
Tyler Johnson has been at the heart of Cypress Bay’s recent rise to prominence in boys’ volleyball.
Playing a mix of setter and outside hitter, Johnson, a 6-3 junior, helped the Lightning remain one of the top programs in the state this season.
For those efforts, Johnson is the Miami Herald’s Broward County Boys’ Volleyball Player of the Year.
Coming off a first-ever regional championship and 20-win season, the Lightning returned a strong core led by Johnson, which advanced to the regional finals.
Although it was denied a trip to state in a five-set loss to Mater Lakes, Johnson established himself as one of the most skilled and versatile players in the county.
“I feel like I have progressed a lot with my leadership,” Johnson said. “I improved a lot during the season after slacking off against lesser competition. I needed to set an example, especially for those on the bench.”
Johnson said his older sister got him interested in the sport.
He has since become a more precise setter in Cypress Bay’s attack while growing into one of the more athletic hitters in the game.
His dynamic athleticism gelled well for the Lightning on the court especially with teammate Mateo Foronda, a 6-3 sophomore outside hitter.
“My athleticism is where I feel I’ve improved the most,” Johnson said. “Getting used to my body
took a lot of work.”
Johnson led Cypress Bay to quality wins throughout the season as the Lightning beat some of the county’s best including Cardinal Gibbons and Archbishop McCarthy as well as Boca Raton.
He and Foronda are expected to return next season in the hopes of taking Cypress Bay to even greater heights and perhaps another run at the school’s first state championship in the sport.
