Aquinas’ Crowley and Douglas’ Iardella are Broward Lacrosse Coaches of the Year
Stoneman Douglas made some history in girls’ lacrosse this year. St. Thomas Aquinas added another couple of trophies to its long, growing legacy in boys’ lacrosse.
Their coaches are Miami Herald’s Broward County Lacrosse Coaches of the Year.
Scott Iardella is the Herald’s Broward County Girls’ Lacrosse Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to their first state final four and Terry Crowley is yet again the Herald’s Broward County Boys’ Lacrosse Coach of the Year after once again guiding the Raiders to the final four.
Iardella, in his second year at Stoneman Douglas, led the Eagles to 15 wins, including five in a row in the playoffs after losing their regular-season finale to Community School of Naples to reach the Class 2A semifinals. Stoneman Douglas fell to Tampa Plant, 16-5, in the 2A semis, but only after winning 15 games for the first time since 2019 and winning multiple postseason games for the first time since 2013, when fewer teams qualified for the Florida High School Athletic Association playoffs each year.
St. Thomas Aquinas also made it to the final four in boys’ lacrosse, reaching the state semifinals for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons, all with Crowley at the helm.
Crowley is the Broward Boys’ Lacrosse Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season after putting the Raiders through a daunting schedule and still getting them to the 2A semifinals.
St. Thomas Aquinas went undefeated against county opponents, but had entered the postseason with a losing record before winning five playoff games by 82 goals to reach the final four. In the 2A semis, the Raiders fell to Lake Mary, 11-10, in a heartbreaking loss to miss a chance at their first state title since 2022.
“We’ve got to learn, let this burn a little bit, and come back next year and play another tough schedule,” Crowley said. “It’s not gonna change much, and hopefully we can get back here.”
