Gulliver’s Schnur and Ransom’s Darcangelo are the Dade Lacrosse Players of the Year
Daniela Darcangelo grew up playing boys lacrosse and eventually for Ransom Everglades coach Bridgette Laskey at the club level before high school.
Darcangelo developed the skills that would make her one of the top midfielders in the state and a cornerstone of one of the better programs in Miami-Dade County.
Gulliver’s Sebastian Schnur followed a similar path in terms of gradual development into one of Dade’s top players. Initially a reserve on the Raiders’ squad, Schnur worked his way into a bigger role and eventually into the top scorer in Gulliver’s program’s history.
Both players enjoyed prolific seasons this past year, leading their respective teams to the regional playoffs.
As such, Schnur and Darcangelo are the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse Players of the Year respectively.
Schnur wins the boys’ award after breaking the school record for points in a season with 130 points. His 45 goals and 85 assists helped Gulliver advance to the Class 1A regional semifinals and finish with an 18-3 record just a year after going 10-10 and not advancing past the district round.
“My goal was to assert myself as a good player in Miami,” Schnur said. “I really didn’t try to put too high expectations on myself. But I feel like I have the best teammates and they helped me accomplish my goals and our team goals. My confidence picked up as the season went on and my shot got better.”
Schnur wasn’t just a scorer or distributor on the field. His defense played a key role in Gulliver’s success as well. Schnur finished with 11 caused turnovers and finished with 74 groundballs.
His versatility helped the Raiders beat all of their opponents from Dade by four or more goals and put them back on a competitive level with some of the elite teams from Broward and Palm Beach.
“It showed we’re moving in the right direction and getting better even outside the city,” Schnur said.
Darcangelo is heading to Florida State University this fall after a stellar career in which she helped Ransom return to being one of the top teams in Dade and contend with some of the state’s best.
“Everything about the school is amazing. It immediately felt like a place you wanted to be,” Darcangelo said.
Darcangelo, who earned second team USA Lacrosse All-Region honors, orchestrated the Raiders’ attack and finished with 29 goals, six assists while totaling 38 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers. She also totaled 42 draw controls.
Her efforts helped Ransom become the only Dade team in Class 1A to advance to the regional quarterfinals. Although the Raiders lost to eventual state champion and No. 1 nationally-ranked Delray Beach American Heritage, Darcangelo was the only Dade player to score a goal on the Stallions this season.
“This was the first season I really took a step back and just tried to enjoy the most I could. It was just us coming together and enjoying every game,” said Darcangelo, whose father, David, played lacrosse at Ithaca College in New York. “We just kept building after each game.”
