Cypress Bay, NBP, Douglas, Springs Charter stars are Broward Tennis Players of the Year
Three state champions and an undefeated senior who was never beaten in Broward.
It was a strong year for Broward County tennis.
And four of the county’s top players exemplified this dominance. That’s why Coral Springs Charter’s Juhnyee See, Stoneman Douglas’ Savita Bagirathan, North Broward Prep’s Max Freedman and Cypress Bay’s Sebastian Mendoza are the Miami Herald’s Broward County Tennis Players of the Year.
See, a senior, and Bagirathan, a junior, split the Girls’ Tennis honors after each won overall state championships in their respective classes.
Bagirathan cruised past the competition, going undefeated wire-to-wire for the Douglas girls at No. 1 singles and winning the Class 4A overall championship.
She became the first overall singles champion in Douglas girls history and should factor into the Eagles’ efforts to try to win their first team title since 2017 next season.
See made history by winning her third consecutive Class 2A overall girls singles state championship. See then prevailed along with Madisen Clark in the overall girls’ doubles division. See’s five individual titles finished tied for the most ever by a Broward County tennis player. See is now tied with St. Thomas Aquinas’ Chris Evert and Audra Cohen.
“My high school journey has been seven years long and it shows how much I’ve grown and how much the team supported me,” said See, who is headed to the Air Force Academy. “It’s really exciting for me and I’m grateful that it happened.”
Mendoza, a senior, went unbeaten throughout the regular season and guided the Lightning to the Class 4A state finals. Despite his team losing to Doral, Mendoza still beat Firebirds’ No. 1 Ezequiel de la Plaza in the final.
On the boys’ side, Freedman won the first overall state singles championship in North Broward Prep history. Freedman won the Class 2A overall boys singles title after beating MAST Academy’s Alessandro Sanchez Zaccaria and finished with a 28-6 overall record.
“Getting that individual championship was really cool,” Freedman said. “This gives me confidence and makes me excited for the future and I really want to play high school again next year and until my senior year.”
