Sometimes on a team as talented as Westminster Academy’s boys’ basketball squad was this season, it’s hard to stand out.

Not for Alexander Lloyd.

A versatile, 6-4 junior combo guard, Lloyd showed his wide range of skills at both ends of the floor as well as his on and off the court leadership as he continues to evolve into one of the top players in the state.

Lloyd averaged 19.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game this season while leading the Lions to a top four ranking overall in the state, a 23-6 record and a trip to the Class 3A regional finals.

“My best asset is my length and getting the ball where I need to,” Lloyd said. “I can improve my

play with more pace.”

As such, Lloyd is the Miami Herald’s Broward County Boys Basketball Player of the Year for Classes 4A-2A.

Although Westminster was denied a trip to state by budding rival Miami Riviera Prep, which went on to repeat as state champions, Lloyd led the Lions to key victories throughout the season as the conductor of a very talented group that included sophomore guard Alex Costanza and junior forward Dwayne Wimbley.

Among the key triumphs were wins at Orlando Oak Ridge as well as victories over Class 2A state champion Weston Sagemont, 2A runner-up Orlando Christian Prep and 3A semifinalist Tampa Berkeley Prep. The Lions also nearly took down nationally-ranked Columbus at home.

“My highlight of the season was competing against some of the best teams in the country and going into Oak Ridge’s house and beating them,” Lloyd said.

Expect Lloyd to have a chance to run it back and potentially earn another shot at Riviera Prep and the 3A state title since he and several of the Lions’ key players return for the 2024-25 season.

“I feel this has been the best I’ve played so far in my high school career,” Lloyd said recently. “I showed all parts of my game and I hope to improve.”
