Somerset Academy eighth grader Jovani Solis’ prep wrestling career is just getting started. Stoneman Douglas senior Gabriela Caro’s time on the mats has come to an end.

But despite being on opposite ends of the career spectrum, the two had one thing in common this season: Perfection.

That’s why Solis and Caro are the Miami Herald’s Broward Wrestlers of the Year.

Solis went an unblemished 63-0 in the 132-pound weight class. He played a key role in Somerset sweeping state titles in Class 1A, winning both the duals tournament in January and the individual bracket tournament earlier this month.

Solis is now a two-time individual state champion after also winning the Class 1A title in the 113-pound class in 2023.

With four years left at the prep level, there’s no telling what Solis can accomplish down the road.

“I put in all the hard work and I had dreams,” Solis said after winning the state title. “I had the dedication that made the me the person I am now.”

As for Caro, she ended her wrestling career on a high note.

She is not only a back-to-back state champion but remains the only girls’ wrestler from Broward County to win a state title. She made it to state all three seasons that the FHSAA has sanctioned girls’ wrestling.

This year, Caro went 18-0 en route to winning the state title in the 130-pound class. As a junior in 2023, Caro was unbeaten with a 21-0 record while competing in the 125-pound classification. She was also state runner-up as a sophomore in 2022.
