Chaminade-Madonna’s Dameon Jones is the Broward 2M-1M Football Coach of the Year
Dameon Jones doesn’t like to take Chaminade-Madonna’s success for granted.
So not long after the Lions comfortably dispatched Clearwater Central Catholic 56-0 in the Class 1M state championship game, Jones said he was already thinking about what’s next.
“This was a special group, but I’m already looking forward to building another special group,” Jones said just after the school’s national signing day ceremony less than two weeks after their state title win. “I’m always thinking ahead. You have to.”
Jones’ consistent vigilance has helped Chaminade maintain its standard as not only one of the state’s best but one of the nation’s best football programs in recent years.
This season, Chaminade reached even taller heights while adding to its already-storied tradition when it won its third consecutive state title, its sixth in the past seven seasons and ascended to a No. 2 national ranking.
For this reason, Jones is once again the Miami Herald’s Class 2M-1M Football Coach of the Year for Broward County.
Coming off a deflating loss to Las Vegas Bishop Gorman in last year’s Geico Nationals, the Lions put together a perfect 14-0 record, which included wins over five nationally-ranked teams. Although they never got a rematch with Bishop Gorman for a possible national crown, Chaminade lived up to the billing as one of the nation’s best thanks to one of the most complete rosters in recent memory in South Florida.
An offense highlighted by wide receiver and MaxPreps National Player of the Year Jeremiah Smith, an Ohio State signee, and a punishing defense led by Herald 2M-1M Co-Defensive Player of the Year Zachary Crothers, Chaminade extended its impressive run of 38 wins in its past 39 games.
The Lions outscored their opponents 687-137 this season and posted shutouts in six of their final seven games, allowing only seven points during that stretch.
Jones, who coached at Hallandale High prior to being hired at Chaminade in 2016, has led the Lions to a state-record eighth consecutive state finals appearances. His six state titles puts him in third place all-time for the most state titles won by a coach in Broward County history behind St. Thomas Aquinas coach Roger Harriott (8) and former Aquinas coach George Smith (7).
