Greg Mason’s boys’ bowling team at Taravella once again proved to be the best in Broward County and among the best in the state. Ashley Chisano’s girls’ team at Western, meanwhile, burst onto the scene and showed it can be a contender as well.

As such, Mason and Chisano are the Miami Herald’s Broward Bowling Coaches of the Year.

Let’s start with Mason, whose team at Taravella continues to impress. In addition to winning BCAA and district championships for a third consecutive year, the Trojans finished 11th during the state qualifying session to advance to the 16-team final tournament bracket — the only team from Dade or Broward to do so this year. Taravella had three bowlers finish in the top 100 individually to lead the charge for the high team finish: Nick Bulzomi (50th), Zachary Kimbrell (57th) and Braiden Meyers (70th). Jeremy Smith and Bryce Collins rounded out the team.

Taravella won its opening contest in the double-elimination bracket against Palm Bay Heritage before falling to the consolation bracket after a second-round loss to Orlando Hagerty. A loss to Winter Springs Circle Christian ended their tournament.

As for Chisano, her girls’ team at Western went from underdogs in the county to finishing as runner-up at the BCAA tournament and first at districts, edging out Archbishop McCarthy and South Plantation for the district title.

The Wildcats finished 22nd at state in the four-game qualifying session at Orlando’s Boardwalk Entertainment Center. Kellie Monahan finished 18th individually, the highest finish of any individual in Broward County.
