Western wide receiver Nandi Ramessar is Broward County Flag Football Player of the Year
Western lost its star quarterback and five other key seniors from its state title-winning team a year ago, and none of it slowed down Nandi Ramessar.
The wide receiver put together her best season yet and is the Miami Herald’s Broward County Flag Football Player of the Year.
Ramessar had 100 catches for 1,018 yards and 16 touchdowns, and carried the Wildcats within two wins of repeating as Class 2A champions.
With one more year ahead of her, Ramessar is hungrier than ever.
“I’m trying to graduate with at least two rings,” the junior said. “I don’t like losing.”
Western has been the gold standard for flag football in Broward for about as long as it has been a sport sanctioned by the Florida High School Athletic Association and it helped set up Ramessar to be next in a line of highly productive stars in Davie.
As a freshman, Western lost by one point in the championship, then won it all last year. “Sadly, it ended not how we envisioned, but we’re going to go back next year.”
As a sophomore, Ramessar was a first-team All-Broward County selection with 40 catches for 607 yards and nine touchdowns. As a junior, she more than doubled her receptions, and came somewhat close to doing the same with her receiving yards and touchdowns.
An upperclassman, she stepped up to be the leader the Wildcats needed to win another Region 4-2A championship, even after losing so much and needing to retool.
“It’s just being a team player,” Ramessar said. “Even though there was some bad plays, we were still being confident, picking each other up, not blaming anybody.”
