American Heritage’s Juan Otero is the Herald’s Broward Boys’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Juan Otero has never backed down when it comes to holding himself to a high standard on the soccer field and in the classroom.

During his four years on the Plantation American Heritage boys’ soccer team, Otero continually raised his level of play.

That consistency paid off this past season when he scored 20 goals and had six assists to lead the Patriots to their first state championship since 2019.

And academically, Otero continues to succeed as he maintained an impressive 5.93 weighted grade point average and scored a 1540 on his SAT.

That balance of excellence in both athletics and academics is why Otero is the Miami Herald’s Boys’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Broward County.

Otero’s achievements paved the way for an opportunity to attend and continue his career at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, a Division-III school in Pittsburgh starting this fall.

“Juan’s got all the attributes, all the qualities of a striker,” Otero’s coach at Heritage, Todd Goodman said earlier this year. “A striker has to have a short memory, so instead of dwelling on any type of past mistakes, you have to stay positive knowing that you’re going to have another opportunity.”

Otero finished his career with 29 goals overall.

After stepping into the forefront his senior season, Otero was named the Miami Herald’s Class 7A-5A Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year this past spring and also earned a spot on the United States Soccer Coaches Association All-State team.

He did all this as an honors student at a school with a very high academic standard like American Heritage where he earned multiple 5 grades on his AP exams.

Otero’s biggest goal on the field was to cap his career as a state champion.

He did this in style, scoring a hat trick in the state championship match - a 3-1 win against Naples High. All three goals came after Heritage had fallen behind 1-0 in the first half.

“What an amazing day,” Otero said after that game. “I don’t think I’ve had three goals in one game in years and to do it today on this stage in my biggest game and the last game of my high school career, you couldn’t dream it up any better.”
