NBP’s Leah Finkelman is the Herald’s Girls’ Soccer 4A-2A Broward Player of the Year
For Leah Finkelman, no goal has been too lofty during her high school career at North Broward Prep.
And that goes for both degree of difficulty in scoring goals and for how many as the prolific striker/midfielder for the Eagles capped a stellar career this season finding the back of the net 36 more times while assisting teammates on 26 more goals.
It’s why Finkelman is the Miami Herald’s Broward County Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year for Classes 4A-2A for the second consecutive season.
“Coming into this season I wanted to hit the 100th goal for my career and I was very happy I did,” Finkelman said.
But Finkelman didn’t stop there.
She ended her career with 113 goals, which set a new school record as well.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, who entered with high expectations coming off a state semifinal appearance at the end of the 2021-22 season, it wasn’t enough to get them back as North Broward Prep fell in the regional semifinals after moving up to Class 4A.
“I think we had that mindset that we wanted to reach state after coming up one game short last year,” Finkelman said. “We lost our first game and that was kind of a shock to everyone. But I think that game kind of helped us through it and showed us it wouldn’t be easy and that we had to fight for each other on the field.”
Finkelman has signed with Pennsylvania University where one of the most prolific scorers in Broward County history will continue to strive to excel both on the soccer field and academically.
“I always knew I wanted to go to a school with high level soccer but challenging academics too,” Finkelman said. “Being recognized for something that I love is amazing, especially two years in a row and this is the cherry on top after such an amazing career at North Broward Prep.”
