Palmer Trinity’s Scarlett Baur is the Herald’s Girls’ Soccer 4A-2A Player of the Year

When Scarlett Baur was only in sixth grade, she got her first taste of high school soccer.

While some players might feel like a fish out of water, Baur overcame any initial nerves and began to love it, thriving against older players.

“I’ve always just tried to be out of my comfort zone,” Baur said. “In sixth grade, I was completely scared, but I threw myself out there. It made me comfortable eventually and I got used to playing in different environments.”

Those experiences have made Baur, now a freshman at Palmer Trinity, one of the most prolific strikers in South Florida.

Baur put together another stellar season this year, which is why she is the Miami Herald’s Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year for Classes 4A-2A.

Baur scored 20 goals and had eight assists against some of the county’s best competition while leading the Falcons to the Class 3A regional semifinals.

Baur’s skills in the open field have made her a consistent scoring threat and she’s formed a potent combination with teammates Lila Algarin, a freshman, and senior Angelica Deribeaux, expanding Palmer Trinity’s ability to score goals with multiple players.

“I think my speed and off the ball awareness really improved this season,” said Baur, who grew up idolizing United States soccer star Alex Morgan.

Unfortunately for Palmer Trinity and Baur, the Falcons’ goal of reaching the state final for the first time since 2012 came up short when they were eliminated by nearby rival Westminster Christian.

But Baur took the loss as a learning experience as she will be part of a strong core returning next season at Palmer.

“I kind of surprised myself with how many goals I was able to score, but I was really hoping we’d go further,” Baur said. “I’m not disappointed because I’m really proud of our team and we still had a really good year.”
