Taravella’s Mason, Archbishop McCarthy’s Covone are Broward bowling coaches of the year
Greg Mason led the Coral Springs Taravella boys’ bowling team to newfound heights this season. Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy’s Chris Covone, meanwhile, saw both of his bowling teams continue their latest runs of success.
Their efforts this season are why Mason and Covone are the Miami Herald’s 2022 Broward bowling coaches of the year.
Mason led the Taravella bowling team to a second consecutive BCAA Championship and a district runner-up finish to qualify for state as a team for just the second consecutive year and fifth time in school history.
And once they got to the biggest stage, the Trojans put together their best performance of the season. They finished 14th as a team (an eight-spot improvement from their 22nd-place finish last season) to qualify to the Baker tournament round of the state championship, which consisted of the top 16 teams, for just the second time in school history (also 2016).
Taravella won its first-round matchup against No. 3 seed Merritt Island Edgewood before losing to No. 6 seed Cambridge Christian to fall to the consolation bracket. The Trojans won their next two matches against Bayside and Pinellas Park before their state run ended in the fifth round to Heritage High.
As for Covone, he led Archbishop McCarthy to another all-around year of success. Both the Mavericks’ boys’ and girls’ teams won district titles to advance to state.
The boys joined Taravella in advancing to the Baker round of the state tournament after finishing 16th in qualifying but went 0-2 for an early exit. The girls, who advanced to state as a team for the first time since 2020 and third time overall, finished 22nd during qualifying — their highest-ever finish at state after finishing 24th in 2020 and 31st in 2015.
