Belen cross country dominates Miami-Dade County Youth Fair Championships

It’s early, but the Belen Jesuit cross country team is looking in fine shape to make a statement yet again this year after capturing the Class 3A title on the boys’ side a year ago.

The Wolverines showed off their prowess on Friday, taking home the boys’ team title at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair Championships on Friday in dominant fashion. Belen posted a perfect score of 15 with the first five players affiliated with the team competition crossing the finish line in the 5K race. All seven Belen runners finished in the top nine of the 162-runner field.

The five runners who contributed to the perfect finish: Freshman Adam Magoulas (first place, 16:29.29), senior Sebastian Roa (second, 16:48.05), sophomore Diego Gomez (third, 16:54.84), senior Cesar Aguizzi (fifth, 17:02.04) and senior Giancarlo Benitez (sixth, 17:06.73). Sophomore Javier Vento (17:12.33) finished eighth and senior Lucas de la Hoz (17:14.99) crossed the line ninth.

Homestead senior Deiondre Williams, running as an individual, finished fourth with a time of 16:56.08. Ferguson sophomore Alejandro Morillo (seventh, 17:10.62) and Ransom Everglades senior James Cusack (17:18.31) rounded out the top 10.

From a team standpoint, Columbus (second place, 100 points), Coral Park (third, 115), Ransom Everglades (fourth, 128) and TERRA (fifth, 163) rounded out the top five.

Braddock won the girls’ 5K race with 32 points and all five of its point scorers finishing in the top-12 Carrollton finished as runner-up with 127 points, followed by Gulliver Prep (third, 130), Ransom Everglades (152) and Ferguson (164).

The top 10 individuals: Gulliver Prep junior Natalie Varela (19:24.56), Palmetto junior Jordan Shapiro (19:28.22), Braddock junior Rebecca Bergnes (19:37.71), Braddock junior Lisa Adjouadi (19:51.96), Ferguson sophomore Ana Rodriguez (20:08.16), Coral Reef sophomore Krystal Rodriguez (20:38.58), South Dade junior Rahyah Andressohn (20:55.76), Ferguson junior Bianca Banato (20:57.74), Coral Reef freshman Kalyn Gibbs (21:01.47) and Braddock sophomore Paola Bencosme (21:09.79).
