Coy, a former competitor on The Ultimate Fighter, is a top level freestyle wrestler from Portland via Northern California.

UFC legend Randy Couture recruited him for college at Oregon State University, and being from Portland, he trained in MMA with Colt Toombs, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper. Coy also worked out with Chael Sonnen and many top athletes during his journey.

Interview with Nathan Coy

Coy began amateur wrestling at age 8 and quickly fell in love with the sport. His father, Tim, a working man’s man, saw the potential in his son, helping him develop as a wrestler and a person. Like father, like son, Nathan adopted his father’s strong work ethic.

So Coy gives 110-percent during training, something he’s done his entire life. He excelled in tournaments as a youth and also in high school, winning a state title. College was a goal, but he struggled in high school with academics/SATs. He overcame those dificulties to not only wrestle for an NCAA Division I program but also earn a college degree.

At Oregon State University, Coy was an NCAA semifinalist and an All-American in wrestling. He amassed an 85-42 record in college. Even with challenges on and off the mat, he proved it can be done, working hard in the training room and in the college classroom.

After training in Colorado Springs with some of the best in the country, Coy’s Olympic dreams ended but another one began -- mixed martial arts fighting. Nicknamed Soulforce, he competed for Strikeforce and Bellator, before signing with UFC.

It’s been a fantastic ride. A pro since 2007, the 37-year-old has a wealth of experience, taking advantage of his wrestling skill to set up submissions and strikes in the Octagon.

A determined Coy (14-6) is ready for UFC Fight Night 83.
