This Virginia Tech Hokie with big WWE ties will play basketball in Miami against UM on Saturday

Virginia Tech sophomore basketball player Brandon Rechsteiner, whose dad is WWE Hall of Famer “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner and cousin is WWE Intercontinental Champ Bron Breakker, will be in town Saturday as Virginia Tech plays the University of Miami at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables.

Where his family has success in amateur wrestling, pro wrestling and high school and college football, Rechsteiner is making his own mark in hoops.

My video interview with Virginia Tech Hokies basketball player Brandon Rechsteiner.

Rechsteiner is from Acworth, Georgia, where he starred in basketball for Etowah High School. He also played football and did that well, too, but his passion is basketball, and he parlayed his high school and club/travel basketball prowess into a college scholarship with the NCAA Division I Hokies. He was recruited by several colleges, including the University of Miami but opted for Virginia Tech, where he played some as a freshman and is playing more this sophomore season.

His cousin, Bron, excelled in football at Etowah High School as did Brandon’s brother, Brock, currently a standout receiver and WWE NIL signee at NCAA Division I Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Brandon and Brock’s uncle (and Bron’s father) is WWE Hall of Famer Rick Steiner. Before becoming pro wrestling stars, his dad and uncle were amateur wrestling standouts for the University of Michigan. What an athletic family.

Brandon, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound guard aspires to play basketball in the NBA, G-League and/or Europe. He says his brother Brock wants to play football in the NFL and is destined to be a WWE Superstar. Brandon is also interested in WWE, when his basketball playing days are over, hinting at a Steiner Brothers 2.0 and/or a faction with the brothers and cousin Bron.

Two University of Michigan wrestling standouts, The Steiner Brothers (Rick and Scott) are one of the best pro wrestling tag teams all-time. Scott transitioned very successfully into singles wrestling as well, becoming a world champion as “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner. Not many reached world champion status in singles wrestling, after major tag team accomplishments. Bret “The Hitman” Hart, “HBK” Shawn Michaels, Booker T, Bubba Ray Dudley and Scott Steiner -- to name a few of the few-- did.

More about Brandon Rechsteiner & Family

He averaged 18 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.8 steals per game as a senior, guiding Etowah to the Goergia High School Athletics Class 6A Final Four.

He was coached by Ben Miller while playing for the Atlanta All-Stars travel basketball team. A consensus four-star recruit, he was rated the 87th-best prospect in the 2023 class on 247Sports and tabbed the second-best point guard in the state of Georgia and the 15th-best point guard nationally, according to 247Sports.

He chose the Hokies over Gonzaga, Tennessee, LSU, Xavier, Clemson, Notre Dame and the University of Miami. His mom Christa and dad Scott Rechsteiner (Scott Steiner) attend his games. Scott sometimes wears a Hokies hat.
