A few minutes before the Legends of Wrestling met with press on Friday, July 31 at Marlins Park in Miami, they heard the news of Rowdy Roddy Piper’s death.

In conjunction with the Miami Marlins/San Diego Padres baseball game, Legends of Wrestling Night at Marlins Park featured Kevin Nash, Bushwhacker Luke, Mick Foley, The Nasty Boys (Knobbs and Sags), JoJo and Tyrus (Brodus Clay). While entertaining fans as they and Piper have done for many years, the legends also paid tribute to Hot Rod on Friday night.

The Marlins hosted the Legends of Wrestling, where fans met the wrestling talent. The legends were saddened by the news, but they did a good job with fans, signing autographs and posing for photos. Fans remembered, too.

Reports noted Piper was found dead on Friday in his home in Hollywood, Calif. He was 61.

During the press conference, Knobbs opened with a statement on behalf of the legends. The legends wore their game face, answering questions, but later Sags presented Bushwhacker Luke, who spent time on the road with Piper.

“We were crying together 10 minutes ago,” Sags said before introducing Bushwhacker Luke. “Luke and [Bushwhacker] Butch were on the road with him since the early 60s, and they are best friends with Roddy from Portland or wherever, here and back, around the country.

An emotional Bushwhacker Luke remembered his friend. “I just spoke to Roddy about two weeks ago to lift his spirits because he moved from Oregon down to L.A. to be close to the business...Great guy. I have many road stores to tell, but now at the moment is a sad time seeing a good friend of mine pass away.”
