What a night for South Florida’s Ata Maivia Johnson as her son and grand-daughter appeared on the recent Golden Globes awards show.
Her son is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and her grand-daughter (Rock’s teenage daughter) is Simone Garcia Johnson.
It marked the first time father and daughter worked together on a TV show. Rock was a presenter, while Simone became the first Golden Globes Ambassador.
After Rock presented the award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie with his daughter standing nearby, he later shared the stage with her again, but this time she spoke as they discussed to the world the significance of the naming change to the ambassador program.

The Golden Globes selects a young member of a family of an iconic Hollywood star each year to serve as Miss Golden Globe. The person distributes trophies and guides presenters and winners around the stage during the show. The position was recently renamed Golden Globe Ambassador to reflect the times, reflecting inclusivity.
Simone is very active on social media and addresses/supports important causes, including the Time’s Up legal defense fund.
She is also very close with grammy.
Ata, who accompanies Simone and her friends to WWE shows in South Florida, watched the Golden Globes from her South Florida home.
Hailing from a great wrestling family, Ata is very smart about the wrestling business. Her father (High Chief Peter Maivia) and former husband (Rocky Johnson) are WWE Hall of Famers. Her mother, Lia, broke ground as one of the first female wrestling promoters. Many relatives also have pro wrestling roots.
Here is a Q&A I conducted with her via email about The Rock, Simone, The Golden Globes, the Presidency and more.
JV: What did you think of seeing your son and grand-daughter together like that on a big stage and Simone speaking to the world...and how they did?
AMJ: “One minute I was thinking how awesome my son and granddaughter look on TV. Then the next minute it got surreal, when it dawned on me that it’s Simone’s very first time ‘working’ on TV, and it’s the very first time that Dwayne and Simone have ever worked together on TV and for the same event. Simone is now the first ever Golden Globes Ambassador of the 2018 Golden Globes Awards. I was beyond amazed, and indeed one very proud mom and grammy.”
JV: Was Simone nervous? Was Dwayne nervous for his daughter?
AMJ: “Simone may have been nervous, but it didn’t show. I think Dwayne was more nervous for his daughter than she was. What I saw was an extraordinarily poised, confident and beautiful young girl, knowing her role, and doing a great job on that stage.”
JV: Did you or her mom (Dany Garcia) help select her dress for the show?
AMJ: “Simone’s taste in fashion is totally ‘gucci,’ [cool] and with mom Dany’s help, they picked a winner.”
JV: Is Simone interested in becoming an actress, TV/movie director and/or pro wrestler? How do you think she would do in any of those?
AMJ: “I do know that one of her goals is to pursue pro wrestling in the future, which would then make her the first fourth generation wrestling superstar in our family, following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather, her grandfather and her father. She’s intelligent, funny, talented, quick on the draw, and she's focused. Hence, whatever is in her future, whether it be in the wrestling ring or in the world of movies and entertainment, I concur that she will conquer...No pun intended.”
JV: What do you think of today’s pro wrestling?
AMJ: “I love watching today’s pro wrestling superstars, full of life, talented and charismatic characters. And I also love watching the all time greats, like Dwayne The Rock Johnson.”
JV: Dwayne mentioned in interviews he might consider running for President someday.
AMJ: “If, someday, should Dwayne run for President, I can confidently say, I will indeed vote for him.”
JV: I would, too.

Simone is very proud of her father, who she loves dearly, but she had a different take on the Presidency. Her choice is someone she is equally proud of and loves.

Her mom, Miami native Dany Garcia, is a smart businesswomen, specializing in business, finance, marketing and decision making. Also a graduate of the University of Miami (where The Rock and her met), Dany is his manager, a close confidant, his producing partner (Seven Bucks), and his ex-wife.
It’s a testament to their business acumen and character that they’ve been able to work together very successfully and maintain a family atmosphere, even after marriage. One of the great success stories for sure and a life lesson on how to handle divorce.
Forget Oprah. What about a Rock/Garcia ticket or Garcia/Rock.
Look what they’ve done together so far.
