Scotland’s Tartan Army to take over loanDepot park for Marlins vs. Rangers game
World Cup fever will take over loanDepot park, and the decibel level might reach new heights on Monday night as the Tartan Army of traveling Scottish fans has already sold out several sections of the stadium, with more fans still buying tickets for the Marlins’ game against the Texas Rangers.
More than 20,000 Scottish supporters traveled to the Boston area for the team’s first two games, a 1-0 win against Haiti last Saturday and the upcoming match against Morocco on Friday. They begin migrating to South Florida over the weekend ahead of next Wednesday’s match against Brazil at Hard Rock Stadium.
On Sunday night, the Red Sox hosted Scotland Day at Fenway Park, giving away specially themed Tartan jerseys. The Tartan Army showed up en masse, marching through the streets to the stadium in kilts, playing bagpipes and singing.
The party continued inside Fenway Park, where the Red Sox hosted (coincidentally) the Texas Rangers. The Scottish supporters’ passionate and ear-piercing rendition of “Flower of Scotland,” the national soccer team’s anthem, went viral on social media. They also treated baseball fans to Scottish tunes “500 Miles” by the Proclaimers, “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie” by Baccara and belted out “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”
The Tartan Army continued its MLB takeover Tuesday night, making a side trip to Yankee Stadium during the six-day break between World Cup games.
David Steedman, a Scottish fan from Miramar who is helping organize local activities for the Tartan Army, was a guest on the Herald’s Inside Inter Miami podcast on Wednesday. He urged fans to join them at the Marlins game.
“If you want to see the Miami Marlins stadium packed, as if it was a World Series, then I strongly suggest you book your tickets for Monday night’s game against, ironically, the Texas Rangers, the team they met up at Fenway Park, so the Texas Rangers are becoming very familiar with the Scottish fans.
“We’re going to take over loanDepot park, the more the merrier. Like some other fans, I’m not going to the [World Cup] game on Wednesday, the ticket prices are ridiculous, so for many of us, this is as close as we’re going to get as an army at the Marlins’ stadium, so we’re looking forward to it very much.”
