Jojo Frigerio, Rayah Seckler lead Barry Buccaneers to soccer victory
The seventh-ranked Barry Buccaneers tripled up the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish for their fifth straight win, 3-0, at Buccaneer Field on Thursday night.
The Bucs improved to 8-1-1 on the year, while the Sailfish dropped to 2-6-1.
Jojo Frigerio and Rayah Seckler teamed up twice in the first half to forge a 2-0 lead at the break. In the 13th minute, Frigerio slipped a pass through the middle of the Sailfish defense and Seckler ran on for a one-on-one chance against keeper Kayla Wincko and converted to the near post. In the 26th minute, Frigerio lifted a moon shot cross into the middle of the Sailfish box. The defense failed to clear the ball and the ball found Seckler alone in the box and she hit the net from nine yards.
Lauren Manna put the cap on the game in the 76th minute. Amanda Traynor slipped the ball through the defense and Manna converted the one-on-one chance against Wincko.
Becca Rogers made two saves on the night to pick up her sixth win. Wincko kept the game from getting completely out of hand with seven saves. Barry held a 16-5 edge in shots.
The Bucs travel to Saint Leo on Saturday to face the 23rd-ranked Lions in a match that could go a long way to deciding the regular season champions in the Sunshine State Conferenc
▪ Southeastern 2, St. Thomas 1: St. Thomas (6-6-1. 2-4 TSC) fell to Southeastern (8-5, 2-4 TSC) 2-1 in a tightly contested Sun Conference match on at SEU Field in Lakeland. The win gave Southeastern a one-game lead over the Bobcats in The Sun Conference South Division standings as both teams jockey for postition in advance of postseason play.
