Barry University’s Emma Onila, Linda Fritschken repeat as ITA doubles champions
Barry University women’s tennis doubles partners Emma Onila and Linda Fritschken won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championships title Friday for a second consecutive year.
Onila and Fritschken, seeded third, beat Armstrong Atlantic’s Dora Andrejszki and Lena Lutzeier, 6-2, 6-1, in the finals at Palmetto Tennis Center at Sumter, S.C.
The Buccaneers pair are the first to win back-to-back titles in the eight-region NCAA Division II tournament. They will advance to the Super Bowl Championships to compete against the winners of the junior college, NAIA and NCAA Division III brackets.
▪ Barry’s Fabian Groetsch lost in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championships to Armstrong Atlantic’s Fernando Bogajo on Friday.
The No. 2 seeded Groetsch, a senior from Nuremberg, Germany, fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to the third-seeded Bogajo.
Groetsch, competing for the second time in his Barry career at the ITA fall championships, was one of eight region winners from around the country.
