While Florida coach Jim McElwain faces a looming decision at quarterback, the rest of the Gators’ depth chart remains fluid, too, in advance of the team’s opener Sep. 5 against New Mexico State.
“The first couple games there’s still going to be some experimentation,” he said, as UF has a number of undecided position battles at linebacker, offensive line and receiver.
“Everyday someone’s job is at stake, and that’s what you hope the competition helps you really keep getting better each practice.”
All-American cornerback Vernon Hargreaves and senior defensive lineman Jon Bullard are definite starters, but McElwain praised the two veterans for their leadership and work ethic during a physical training camp.
“There’s obviously a pretty good chance that Vernon Hargreaves is going to start, but the good thing about him is he’s practicing everyday,” McElwain said.
“I’ve been ecstatic about [Bullard’s] fall camp so far. How hard he’s worked and how he’s affecting his position group in a positive way. There’s some guys that make it into this time and say, ‘Hey, you know, let me just kind of try to just waltz this on into the season,’ and I’ll say those two guys have really done a good job.”
