Orange Bowl matchup set. What to know about the College Football Playoff quarterfinal
The Orange Bowl, which this year serves as one of four quarterfinals for the College Football Playoff, is set.
The No. 4 seed Texas Red Raiders and No. 5 seed Oregon Ducks will play at Hard Rock Stadium on Jan. 1 — potentially for the first of two times with the national championship game also being held there on Jan. 19. It’s both teams’ first-ever appearance in the Orange Bowl.
Kickoff for the Orange Bowl is set for noon. It’s the first of three quarterfinals on Jan. 1, followed by the Rose Bowl at 4 p.m. between No. 1 seed Indiana and No. 9 seed Alabama and then the Sugar Bowl at 8 p.m. between No. 3 seed Georgia and No. 6 seed Ole Miss.
The quarterfinals start at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 with the Cotton Bowl between No. 2 seed Ohio State and No. 10 seed Miami Hurricanes.
This will be the fourth-ever meeting between Texas Tech and Oregon. The Ducks have won each of the other three meetings — 38-30 in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept. 9, 2023; 16-13 in Eugene, Oregon, on Sept. 19, 1992; and 28-13 in Lubbock on Sept. 14, 1991.
Texas Tech received a first-round bye in the 12-team playoff field after going 12-1 and winning the Big 12 Championship Game. The Red Raiders rank second nationally in scoring, averaging 42.5 points per game, and all of their wins were by at least 22 points. Texas Tech’s lone loss was 26-22 to Arizona State on Oct. 18. The Red Raiders outscored their next six opponents by a combined 245-43, pitching two shutouts and holding opponents to fewer than 10 points three other times (including BYU to seven points both in their regular-season matchup and the conference championship game).
Oregon went 11-1 in the regular season, with its sole defeat a 30-20 home loss to Indiana on Oct. 11. The Ducks beat James Madison, the No. 12 seed in the CFP field, 51-34 in their first-round matchup on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinal.
