College football Week 15: Joe vs. the Pro

It was with great excitement and anticipation that Joe Goodman of the Miami Herald was looking forward to the first set of conference championship games before college football’s first ever playoff for FBS schools. Then the president of Joe’s alma mater killed football at his school, UAB. So Joe’s not very interested in celebrating anything this week, besides another victory for his friend, the Pro, Lee Sterling of Paramount Sports.com, in this humble little feature we call Joe vs. the Pro. Both Joe and the Pro went 5-3 straight up and 3-5 against the spread last week, and entering the final week of Joe vs. the Pro, the Pro is 61-50 against the spread and 81-30 straight up. Joe is 48-63 against the spread and 77-34 straight up. On to the picks!

Arizona vs. Oregon, Oregon by 14.5

Joe

I’m holding my Heisman vote until the last possible moment this year. Marcus Mariota could be my guy with a clean performance against Arizona. Oregon 35, Arizona 28

Pro

Zona has the Ducks number winning the last two games in wire-to-wire fashion and rushing for a combined 512 yards. Oregon 38, Arizona 34

Iowa State at TCU, TCU by 34

Joe

TCU has blossomed into my favorite team this year, and the Horned Frogs will be looking to impress the committee with one more blowout. TCU 52, Iowa State 15

Pro

Horned Frogs have two extra days to prepare while Cyclone D is worn down. Blowout city! TCU 54, Iowa State 10

Kansas State at Baylor, Baylor by 8.5

Joe

Kansas State’s program has grown on me through the years. They’ve lost to two teams in the Top 10 so far this season, but not this weekend. Kansas State 42, Baylor 38.

Pro

Wildcat QB Jake Waters has the arm and wheels to keep up with Bear QB Bryce Petty. Baylor 37, Kansas State 35

Louisiana Tech at Marshall, Marshall by 12.5

Joe

Marshall was emotionally drained after that classic game (and preposterous score: Western Kentucky 67, Marshall 66!) last week, but Rakeem Cato bounces back from his four-pick performance. Marshall 34, La. Tech 30

Pro

The dejected Herd lost in OT last week and went from potentially playing in the Fiesta Bowl to the Zaxby Dallas Bowl. The wrong team is favored. Louisiana Tech 48, Marshall 40

Alabama vs. Missouri, Alabama by 14.5

Joe

Lane Kiffin deserves recognition for the work he has done as offensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide. On Saturday, he’ll make that abundantly clear. Alabama 45, Missouri 21

Pro

Not sure Tiger D can contain Bama all-everything WR Amari Cooper and its running back duo of T. J Yeldon and Derrick Henry for four quarters. Alabama 38, Missouri 17

Florida State vs. Georgia Tech, FSU by 4

Joe

Google “three-legged Paul Johnson” and thank me later. Georgia Tech 28, FSU 25

Pro

Seminole DC Charles Kelly was with the Yellow Jacket staff for seven seasons, leaving in 2012, and knows their option-based offense inside and out. Florida State 31, Georgia Tech 14

Wisconsin at Ohio State, Wisconsin by 4

Joe

Bad luck befalls the Buckeyes once again. Wisconsin 20, Ohio State 17

Pro

New Buckeye QB Cardele Jones is a talented passer, and HC Urban Meyer is a perfect 12-0 ATS as an underdog. Ohio State 31, Wisconsin 28

Fresno State at Boise State, Boise State by 21

Joe

The Broncos won by 10 earlier in the season, but Fresno State has recovered well since its three-game, mid-season skid. Boise State 45, Fresno State 38

Pro

Broncos’ 37-27 win over Bulldogs earlier in the season was misleading as they controlled the line of scrimmage and ran for 264 yards. Boise State 42, Fresno State 17
