FIU’s defensive coordinator from 2013 and ’14 is now Pittsburgh’s, and Pitt’s defensive coordinator from 2012-14 is now FIU’s.
That’s the way things worked out after FIU announced the hiring of Matt House on Friday. House fills the defensive coordinator position that Josh Conklin vacated when he took the corresponding job at Pitt earlier this month under new coach Pat Narduzzi.
House had worked at Pitt under former coach Paul Chryst, now the new coach at Wisconsin. Though widely reported that House would go with Chryst to Wisconsin, Chryst kept current Badgers defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.
So House needed a home. He found one at FIU, which will bring back nine starters from a fast, turnover-gobbling defense.
At Pittsburgh, House’s defenses ranked 34th and 33rd nationally in 2013 and 2014, respectively, although it helped greatly last season that Pitt’s running game ranked fifth in time of possession, thus cutting the number of defensive possessions per game.
