FIU defensive end Michael Wakefield’s C-USA honor comes with a caveat

Conference USA named FIU senior defensive end Michael Wakefield the league’s Defensive Player of the Week for his four sacks in FIU’s 48-31 win Saturday against Charlotte. Wakefield still will miss the first half of the upcoming Saturday game at Marshall after being ejected for a high hit on Charlotte quarterback Matt Johnson.

When asked if the award, which the conference selects after soliciting media members opinions, meant the conference was reconsidering the call made on Wakefield by conference referees, a C-USA spokesman e-mailed, “One has nothing to do with the other.”

Conference USA has no appeals process. FIU sent a video to the conference that the school feels exonerates Wakefield.

Wakefield’s four sacks tied a team record held by Audric Adger (2007 vs. North Texas, the game that broke the 23-game losing streak) and Antwan Barnes (2006 vs. Middle Tennessee State).
